As part of the 2017 AAPG’s Earth Science Educator Program, Erik Scott led a group of educators to investigate the features and processes of Panther Creek, just south of The Woodlands, Texas. The creek is a natural laboratory that shows the ever changing characteristics of a meandering stream, the processes that continually modify it and the resultant deposits from those processes. One of the unique features of Panther Creek is the clear water which allows you to see the creek bottom and watch how ripples and other features form and migrate in real-time!
To ensure the next generation of earth scientists it is important to train the teachers and get them excited. There is no better way to accomplish that than to get a group of 20 middle or high school students wading ankle deep in a stream!
Erik has led numerous groups to Panther Creek and everyone who comes gains insight into fluvial systems. As Panther Creek is one of Erik’s favorite places around Houston, Texas he is always ready for another visit.
